Chasmatic is my latest passion project! It will be a role-playing FPS game where you explore procedurally generated caves full of hostile cybernetic alien bugs (Cybugs) and complete quests for the friendly robotic inhabitants (Robodies).
I began developing Chasmatic in Unity in September of 2019. I will continue working on it until it is the greatest game ever created by anyone, past, present, or future. It shouldn’t take me too much longer.
My inspirations behind the project include Deep Rock Galactic, Fallout: New Vegas, and Minecraft. From those games, I’d like to capture the feeling of free exploration, unbridled player expression, and the sandbox-like freedom to approach problems in any way you choose. I am only one person, so it might take me a while, but it will be so worth it when it’s finished.
In contrast to my past solo-dev projects, I’m challenging myself to make as much content procedurally generated as possible. The caves you explore are randomly generated and decorated. The enemies you encounter generate and animate procedurally. Your weapons are assembled from a myriad of different parts, which can have unique stacking effects. I want everyone who plays Chasmatic to come away having experienced an adventure unique to them.
I’ve also set out to incorporate elements from my favorite genre of games: immersive sims. Chasmatic will contain many versatile systems that interact with one another, allowing players to discover unexpected emergent gameplay throughout their adventure. My favorite moment in games is when an idea pops into my head and I think “wait… can I do this?” and the answer is a resounding YES. My hope is that Chasmatic will evoke that feeling in everyone who plays it.
